A Stroll Back in time
Sunday, September 9, 2018
2018 is the 150th anniversary year of the Heritage Home for Women providing service to the community. The theme for the year is “Reflections” as we celebrate both our illustrious past, as well as our future.
First off, on Saturday, February 10, 2018, we will be holding a “Silver Tea” at the Home. Over the years, Silver Teas have been a traditional event held at the Home. Historically, Silver Teas have been reported as far back as the early 1900’s. Churches and charitable organizations have been hosting Silver Teas to benefit a multitude of worthy fundraisers. A Silver Tea is a special gathering, creating a sense of community, enjoying one another’s company while savoring special treats and a sense of nostalgia. In addition to cash or checks, contributions have included silver dollars (way back when…), and sometimes other items as specifically needed by the fundraising organization. In the past, some Silver Teas were quite fancy. One would wear their finest attire and drop their donations upon a silver tray or into a silver bowl. For this tea, the Residents will be decked out in their finest frocks and frills to join guests in enjoying a unique afternoon with a Victorian flair.
Then, on March 24, we will be holding an “Antiques Roadshow Appraisal Day” at the Home. At this event, for $5 per item appraised, professional antique dealers, who, just like on the popular television show, will analyze and appraise your antique valuables. Take a look at your family heirlooms and antiques now to bring to this fun event, you never know what treasures you might have in your home!
Next, on Thursday, April 26th at the historic Stockade Inn, we will be holding “Reflections – an Anniversary Celebration”. "Reflections" will offer attendees a glimpse into our past while enjoying scrumptious fare, illuminating conversations and musical entertainment provided by the Women of Note. It will certainly be an evening to remember. We encourage you to join us for this event.
Rounding out the year, on the morning of Sunday, September 9th (our actual anniversary date), we will be hosting "A Stroll Back in Time" - a fund & friend raising stroll/walk for those who are interested and able, starting from the present Heritage Home location through the Union College Campus to the original Home on Green Street in the Stockade section of Schenectady. We even are planning for trolley rides for interested participants to return them to the Home following the Stroll. As this will be a fund/friend raiser, we will ask “strollers” to get monetary pledges from friends and family. For this event, we encourage all strollers and supporters along the way to dress in Victorian garb as well. Registration/pledge forms for participants interested in this event will soon be available on our website.
Please consider sponsorship support for any or all of these events. If you are interested in volunteering and assisting us at the stroll or becoming a sponsor for any or all of them, please let me know, we welcome and appreciate your support.
